Four Steps to Improve Indoor Air Quality
The quality of the air inside your home has a huge impact on your comfort as well as your health. Create cleaner, healthier indoor spaces by following these tips!
1. Upgrade your air filter and change it regularly
Make the switch from low-quality replacement air filters to those with a MERV rating of 8 to 12. These filters can catch smaller contaminant particles, including pet dander, mold spores, dust mites, pollen, chemical fumes, and other pollutants that are a detriment to your indoor air quality.
Your filter needs to be changed regularly; if it’s clogged, it will do no good at removing pollutants from your home’s air supply. The filter manufacturer will list a recommendation for the frequency of changes, though it’s a good idea to do so more often during times of heavy heating and cooling use.

2. Keep moisture in check
Where there’s moisture, mold and mildew has the potential to grow in your home. When exposed to these harmful contaminants, your family can suffer serious health consequences. Whole home dehumidifiers work to remove excess humidity in all areas of the home, and are a great line of defense in preventing mold and mildew growth.
Alternatively, you don’t want your indoor air to be too dry. Air that is void of moisture can increase the negative effects of airborne pollutants, irritating the skin and sinuses. A whole home humidifier can balance indoor humidity when natural moisture is lacking, keeping your home’s air properly humidified.
3. Ventilate your home
Today’s homes are typically sealed tight to prevent energy loss – but this also prevents natural ventilation which moves airborne contaminants out of your living areas. Mechanical ventilation systems replace stale, polluted indoor air with fresh outdoor air. They are energy efficient and can work with your heating and cooling systems to supply your home with fresh air at comfortable temperatures.
4. Clean your air
While a high-efficiency air filter will do a good job removing contaminants from your indoor air supply, boost pollutant control in your home by installing an air cleaner (also called an air purifier). Whole home air cleaners work directly with your heating and cooling systems to remove particles as air passes through. Air cleaners can remove up to 99.97% of indoor air contaminants.
There are several types of air cleaners which use different methods for eliminating contaminants, such as ultraviolet light, activated carbon, high efficiency particulate air, or negative ion technology. Depending on the types of pollutants found in your home as well as their concentration, one type of system may work better for treating your air supply; working with a skilled HVAC technician who knows how to diagnose indoor air quality issues will help ensure you choose the right solutions.
