Furnace Broken? Here are 5 quick fixes that might help!

Before contacting ACE, here are some simple steps you can take to see if getting your furnace working is a quick fix:

1. Make sure your thermostat is set to “heat”

Sometimes thermostats can be switched accidentally to “cool” in the winter months – ensure that it’s switched to heat, and your thermostat has power.

2. Double-check the breakers in your electrical panel

Occasionally, a circuit breaker may flip and completely shut down your furnace. Check your electrical panel to make sure the switch associated with your furnace is switched to “on”.

3. Make sure filter is clean and/or replaced

A clogged filter can cause a furnace to shut down completely. If not enough air is coming through, and airflow is restricted, the heat exchanger will overheat and shut down – which is why it’s so important to make sure your air filter is changed regularly. Always turn off your furnace or make sure it’s off via your thermostat before replacing your air filter.

4. Check Blocked ducts

Make sure that all of the registers are open in your house and look for gaps in ductwork that you can visibly see in your home — leaky air ducts can cause poor performance in your heating system.

5. Clean debris and leaves away from exhaust vents, heat pumps or intake areas

If your furnace vents outside your home, it’s important to ensure nothing is blocking the exhaust or intake. If you have a heat pump, it’s important that leaves and grass are cleared away from the fins of the outdoor unit.
