Tips on prepping your home for the cooler weather ahead

As summer winds down and the air cools off in the Northern Virginia area, this is the perfect time for preventative maintenance on your home and your home’s heating system. We’ve put together a checklist of items for you to review to make sure your home is prepared for the cooler days ahead.

Heater Maintenance
In order to reduce operating expenses on your heater, making sure you schedule a furnace tune-up is one of the best things you can do. It will not only extend the life of your heating system but will also improve your home’s air quality.

Check for Air Leaks
The same way that hot air may have crept into your house during the summer months, cold air can do the same thing and reduce your home’s overall energy efficiency. It’s important to inspect the seal around your windows and doors.

Draining Outdoor Faucets
If standing water is left in irrigation systems, hose nozzles or faucets, this can lead to damage when the cold air freezes the water and expands. It’s important to drain any excess water from any outdoor items.

Gutter Check!
Along with fall comes falling leaves. The variety of colors sure look wonderful on trees but not as much in your gutters. Making sure your gutters are clear of leaves and debris will ensure proper water drainage around your home and can prevent flooding or water damage in your basement.

Fire Safety Inspection
Fireplaces and candles are much more common in the cooler months, but could be hazardous – so it’s important to make sure your smoke alarm batteries are up to date, fire extinguishers are inspected/available, and make sure your family has a plan for tackling fire/safety.
